The City of Milton has announced the recipients of its annual Environmental Education Grants. Four local schools have been recognized for their projects dedicated to fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices within their communities. Each school has received a $600 grant to enhance their existing programs and educational environments, as reported by the City of Milton.
Among the recipients for the 2024 grants is Birmingham Falls Elementary, which will enlarge their vegetable garden. The program is spearheaded by a group of fifth-grade girls, designed to change leadership annually to the new set of fifth graders, ensuring a legacy of cultivation and education for the younger students at the school.
Similarly, Summit Hill Elementary has been granted funds that will finance a food waste composting initiative in their lunchroom. This includes acquiring a dehydrator and food processor to handle a higher volume of scraps, producing compost tea for their gardens, according to the City of Milton news release.
Cambridge High School plans to implement a three-bin composter system to facilitate different stages of decomposition, converting organic waste into nutrient-rich soil. In addition, they will adapt their chicken coops to collect rainwater, thereby addressing runoff issues and conserving water resources for the chickens to consume when required.
Lastly, Milton High School's prize money is earmarked for improvements to the Community Based Instruction (CBI) program's on-site garden. The upgrades include adding new tables, enhancing walkways for accessibility, and potentially interspersing mosaic tiles to create even and attractive steppingstones.
