Over the weekend in Minneapolis, an escalation in a family dispute led to the implementation of drone technology by local law enforcement for the apprehension of an armed individual. After a 911 call was placed, a Behavioral Crisis Response Team was initially requested to handle an agitated and aggressive male. The situation, however, quickly evolved as the subject was reported to be holding a firearm, propelling the Fifth Precinct Officers to urgently respond.
The Minneapolis Police Department, as per a social media post, utilized one of their Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to safely locate the individual. The officers, after spotting the man in the backyard, tried to quickly approach and issue commands. When confronted, the man retreated inside his home and subsequently attempted to exit through the front door where he was taken into custody without incident.
"MPD officers responded to a person in crisis reported to be armed, and they contained the individual, and utilized additional resources to safely take the person into custody," said Police Chief Brian O'Hara, expressing satisfaction with the incident's resolution. The timely intervention and strategic use of UAV technology potentially averted a confrontation that could have ended less favorably.
The man involved in the incident was arrested on charges of Domestic Assault and has since been booked into the Hennepin County Jail.
