A motorcyclist has died following a late-night crash on the H-1 Freeway in Honolulu, marking the city's 44th traffic-related fatality this year. The incident occurred around 11:50 PM when a 20-year-old motorcyclist was rear-ended by a vehicle; the force of the collision ejected the motorcyclist onto the roadway, as reported by KITV.
According to KITV, the 35-year-old driver of the vehicle involved was unharmed and remained at the scene whilst the motorcyclist, despite wearing a helmet, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene which showcases the often devastating consequences of high-speed collisions.
The Honolulu Police Department suggests speed was a contributing factor in the crash, but it is yet unclear if the use of drugs or alcohol had any influence on the event, this detail remains under ongoing investigation as stated by Hawaii News Now. Compared to 51 traffic fatalities at this time last year, the total for 2024 now stands at 44.
