A "significant" wreck on I-40 West near Cedar Bluff Road in Knoxville caused major travel disruptions, with the Knoxville Fire Department responding to the scene of the multi-vehicle accident yesterday. WBIR reported that the incident occurred around 6:36 p.m., resulting in all but one lane being closed to traffic by 7:15 p.m., per the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The Fire Department suggested commuters take "alternate routes such as Kingston Pike or Middlebrook Pike."
Significant delays were observed before the collision, with traffic backing up for at least five miles. WVLT covered that officials from the Knoxville Police Department also warned drivers to expect delays and seek other paths. Despite the congestion and the gravity of the accident, I-40 West was later reopened, alleviating traffic conditions.
The Knoxville Fire Department took to social media to alert the community and provide guidance on alternative routing. A post on their Facebook page read: "Significant motor vehicle accident i40 west at Cedar Bluff Road. Consider alternate routes such as Kingston Pike or Middlebrook Pike." This was part of the concerted effort by local authorities to manage the situation and inform the public swiftly.
There were no immediate reports detailing the cause of the accident or the number of vehicles involved. Officials managed to clear the wreckage and restore the traffic flow later in the evening.
