Tragedy struck the Warehouse District of New Orleans yesterday evening as a 24-year-old man was fatally shot. The New Orleans Police Department confirmed the incident took place around 6:39 p.m. on the 700 block of Tchoupitoulas Street, as stated in a report from WGNO. First responders found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and he was declared dead on the scene by emergency medical services, according to NOPD.
Detectives are currently trying to thoroughly gather evidence to determine the person or persons responsible for what appears to have been a targeted attack. "Investigators say the victim was outside when he was approached by an unknown subject who shot him multiple times and then fled," NOPD said in a release, as noted by WWLTV. The shooting prompted an immediate reaction from local businesses, with several establishments, including Lucy's Retired Surfer's Bar and Legacy Craft Kitchen Tavern, closing down for safety concerns and out of respect for the incident.
With the investigation ongoing, NOPD is actively seeking help from the public. They are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist by contacting the Homicide Section detectives at 504-658-5300 or providing anonymous tips through Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
While the area was blocked off for investigation, as highlighted by Nola.com, no immediate release of the victim's identity has been provided. Authorities are deferring information on the victim's connection to the Renaissance Hotel, where the shooting took place just outside. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office is expected to do conduct an autopsy and notify the victim's family before any further details are shared publicly.
