This year, the event will include over 600 speakers and representation from approximately 850 cities, as New Orleans itself becomes subjected to a particular kind of spotlight due to its experiences with managing an active weather climate.
According to WGNO, Mayor "Cantrell will join leaders from across the country and the world to discuss urban planning and green projects," while the City of New Orleans officials say that her insights are expected to serve as a model to benefit other cities. The Smart City Expo will cover various topics, including advancements in "connectivity and data, governance and citizen, energy and environment, mobility and urban space." Mayor Cantrell is to return home following the closure of the conference.
Not without its share of controversy, Mayor Cantrell's overseas engagements have been the subject of scrutiny, especially given recent financial missteps. NOLA.com reports that amid criticisms of her travel habits, in 2022, Cantrell was found to be improperly charging taxpayers for flight upgrades, amounting to a nearly $30,000 debt to the city. Although Cantrell has canceled some trips in the wake of these revelations, she has maintained her international itinerary.

"I think what we're seeing now is genuine questions being asked, with the frequency of travel, regarding what's the purpose and is it absolutely necessary and in the city's best interest?" Moreover, the Mayor's official travel seemed to slow amidst a federal investigation surrounding her and some of her associates, according to Fox 8, although she herself has not been charged with a crime.
