The New Orleans Police Department has made public the body-worn camera footage from an officer-involved shooting that took place early last month. The incident, which left one man dead and another injured on Louisa Street, led to a subsequent standoff when officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, Devin Green, on North Tonti Street.

On October 5, 2024, officers responded to the initial shooting at around 2:00 p.m., arriving to find two men with gunshot wounds, as reported by the NOPD News. Later, one of the victims succumbed to his injuries. Investigations led the NOPD Homicide Section to identify 36-year-old Devin Green, and by 6:43 p.m., Special Operations Division officers had located him and were serving a high-risk warrant at his residence.

The situation escalated when, despite calls for him to surrender, Green opened fire at the officers. Officers identified as Rene Benjamin, Jr., Antravis Turner, and Cody O’Dell, returned fire. Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of Green's or the officers' gunfire. A SWAT team was subsequently called to the scene, resulting in a standoff that lasted until Green's surrender the next morning.

The released footage is part of the NOPD's commitment to transparency during critical incidents. The department's critical incident review policy is designed to maintain public trust and ensure accountability. Officers involved in the shooting, with years of service ranging from six to eight, were reassigned per department protocol but have since returned to duty. All three have been cleared of any wrongdoing in the incident.

Green faces multiple charges including second-degree murder from the incident on Louisa Street, attempted second-degree murder, as well as 14 counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shootout with officers. Charges also include possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal use of weapons, and parole violation. It's a principle of the legal system that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
