In a move that has shaken up the coaching landscape for the New Orleans Saints, Head Coach Dennis Allen has been dismissed from his duties, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and subsequently confirmed by the franchise. Allen, who took the helm in 2022 following Sean Payton's exit, found himself on the outs after a string of seven losses culminated in a narrow 23-22 defeat against the Carolina Panthers yesterday, according to WGNO.
Special Teams Coordinator Darren Rizzi has stepped up to fill the void as interim head coach, a decision detailed in the official announcement from the team today. Addressing Allen's departure, Saints Owner Gayle Benson said, "Dennis has been part of our organization for many years. He is highly regarded within the NFL. He has been extremely loyal and professional and most importantly an excellent football coach for us. All of this makes today very tough for me and our organization." Despite embracing the high level of respect Allen holds within the organization and the NFL, today's decision signaled a clear shift in direction for the team.
In a revealing statement obtained by WGNO, Loomis praised Allen for his resilience amid challenges, stating, “This season, we have had an avalanche of injuries. It took its toll. DA has never offered excuses, he fought each day for this organization and this team and that is what makes today disappointing. Dennis has been an integral part of this organization’s success for the better part of twenty years. He will be missed.”
Entering the head coaching position with the aspiration to do things his own way, Allen's tenure nonetheless fell short of expectations, as noted by Allen in a 2022 interview with Ed Daniels where he stated, "I’m gonna do this my way." Although he was a significant part of the franchise's past successes, including a Super Bowl victory as an assistant, the Saints did not make the playoffs under his leadership, as detailed by WGNO.
As reported by WDSU, the opinion is split on Allen’s potential return in the coming seasons to NFL coaching, possibly mirroring the career trajectory of Steve Spagnuolo, who found redemption in returning to a coordinator role after a stint as a head coach.
There was no immediate word about other coaching changes with the organization reeling from this transition which was likely not an easy decision given Allen’s long history.
