Salt Lake City residents, especially those with business at the Public Safety Building (PSB), should brace for the imposition of parking restrictions around the hub of city emergency services. The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has announced that starting December 1, specific streets near the PSB will be reserved for individuals with permits, according to SLCPD.
The decision comes amid ongoing difficulties for those seeking parking in proximity to the PSB, located at 475 South 300 East. Following the construction of two new apartment buildings in 2020, and with another slated for 2025, the area has seen a parking squeeze. Despite efforts to clarify parking designations through signage and education, the SLCPD acknowledged that problems have persisted, community members, including crime victims have struggled to find parking when visiting the PSB.
As part of the new policy, cars parked without a valid PSB permit will face towing, the SLCPD warns. This enforcement applies to all drivers, including PSB employees with unmarked or personal vehicles. Instructions and warning signs have been erected in the affected areas, namely People’s Way (approximately 420 South) and the city’s east visitor parking. For media personnel, marked vehicles with appropriate branding are excluded from restrictions, whereas journalists in personal vehicles are instructed to display media in-dash placards or to acquire a PSB parking permit.
Community alternatives include on-street paid parking available on 500 South and 300 East. Meanwhile, businesses in the vicinity are urged to disseminate this parking policy update to their tenants, and customers, a gentle nudge to ensure the community stays informed of the upcoming changes. Delivery and rideshare drivers face their own set of restrictions; Blair Street, specifically, is designated a no parking/stopping zone. In an effort, to provide clarity and awareness, the city has released a photo delineating the areas designated for PSB parking.
