
On Tuesday, a woman gave birth along a Northeast Side trail and subsequently abandoned her newborn, San Antonio police report. A passerby discovered the baby before 4 p.m. near the 1900 block of Austin Highway, as KSAT details.
Authorities say, the woman delivered the baby and then fled to an unspecified location. Following the discovery of the infant, the unnamed mother was located and is now being questioned by the SAPD. She is at risk of facing criminal charges, the exact nature of which is currently unclear. The San Antonio Fire Department confirmed that both the mother and infant were transported to a local hospital for care.
In a related event the same day, according to a report by KENS 5, a homeless woman gave birth in a wooded area near Salado Creek. But in this case, the mother left the scene to smoke a cigarette at a nearby bar. A man happened upon the abandoned newborn, still with an umbilical cord attached, and called for help from nearby construction workers.
This series of events leading to the discovery of the newborn began around 3:40 p.m. when police received the call and found the man carrying the baby. The current condition of the baby is stable, and both the mother and child are being cared for at a local hospital. At present, the authorities are waiting to interview all parties involved, and, it is not yet known if the mother will face any charges.
The police have not released details regarding the gender of the baby or if there was any prior relationship between the man and woman involved. Further details are expected as the investigation unfolds, with updates forthcoming to the media and public.
