On Sunday, the Oakland Fire Department responded to a significant two-alarm residential structure fire near 24th Ave and E17th St. Battalion Chief James Bowron detailed that the blaze threatened multiple homes. Yet, due to the quick action of 45 firefighters from 1st and 2nd alarm crews, significant damage to adjacent multi-unit buildings was averted. The Oakland Police Department, Falck, Red Cross, and PG&E also provided support on the scene, according to the Oakland Fire Department.
Within 30 minutes of being on site, approximately 40 firefighters battled the fire, which affected four structures. Wires were reported down on 17th St., but no injuries were reported during this time, per the Oakland Fire Department.
Although the fire was contained, it had not yet been fully controlled, and the public was urged to avoid the area ranging from Foothill to E 19th along 24th Ave as crews continued to work into the evening.
