Following the fire that broke out on November 1, causing significant damage to the southbound approach to the I-471/Daniel Carter Beard Bridge, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has been spearheading a restoration initiative that has drawn on the concerted efforts of hundreds of individuals and dozens of companies. According to recent updates from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), in collaboration with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the city of Cincinnati, progress is being made with the installation of foundational elements for new shoring towers, crucial in providing support for the bridge's compromised structure before demolition operations can commence.
Construction crews are diligently working on the forms for the footers. Concrete pouring is slated to begin Friday, necessitating at least 72 hours for proper curing. The forthcoming week is expected to witness the rise of the shoring towers, which must precede the more precise, "surgical" demolition of the damaged sections. The demolition, planned for the day after Thanksgiving, is a critical step in this high-stakes reconstruction process, informed by detailed engineering plans as conveyed by ODOT representatives.
Inspections have uncovered further impairment in addition to the tasks for the bridge deck. A segment of the northbound concrete wall stretching some 60 feet alongside piers under the southbound approach will require repairs as part of the bridge's revitalization. Yet, these repairs will not hinder the structural integrity of the bridge—a significant relief amid the overall setbacks. ODOT and Great Lakes Construction are coordinating these repair efforts with KYTC, timing them with the overarching demolition schedule.
As for the timetable of reconstruction, it remains in development, hinging on the critical procurement of steel for girder replacement. ODOT is inching closer to finalizing a schedule after reaching out to multiple steel fabricators to identify one that could expedite production, said ODOT. Once steel availability is clearer, ODOT will update the public on a projected completion date for the restoration work. In the interim, traffic has been rerouted, with southbound I-471 closed and detours laid out along I-71 and I-75 South. A single-lane restriction is currently in effect on I-471 North, indicative of ongoing labor and the need for continuous, adaptive traffic management.
