Responding to the devastating wildfires that ravaged Oregon, the state's Fire Marshal has awarded $3 million in grants aimed at bolstering the resilience of communities across Oregon. According to an official announcement, the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) selected 40 communities to receive funding directed at creating defensible spaces and supporting other risk reduction projects to mitigate wildfire damage.
The effort to amp up funding was spurred by the applications from local fire agencies, cities, and counties earlier this year, which totaled up to $4.1 million—a clear indicator of the critical need for such projects. Despite the unyielding nature of the recent wildfire season, with over 1.9 million acres consumed by flames, the work of the OSFM and their partners played a significant role in minimizing structural loss and damage, as recognized by OSFM in their press release.
Among the funded initiatives are vital projects like establishing fire-resistant landscapes around key buildings and infrastructure, local cleanup and debris disposal events, fuel mitigation on public properties, and the formation of community firebreaks targeting protection of susceptible areas and essential services. OSFM's commitment to these endeavors, as expressed by State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple, underscores the importance of continuous local engagement and action against the escalating wildfire threats. "We’ve been working diligently along with our partners over the last few years to create locally driven solutions to the wildfire crisis," Ruiz-Temple remarked.
