Two teenagers are facing serious charges after an alleged armed robbery in Woodridge Park, as reported by the DuPage County State's Attorney and the Woodridge Police Department. Eighteen-year-old Jordan Jones from Oswego and a sixteen-year-old from Woodridge have been accused of a daylight heist that involved using a BB gun to forcibly take items from a man they arranged to meet through Snapchat. According to the DuPage County News, Jones is charged with one count of Armed Robbery, a Class X Felony, and one count of Misdemeanor Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday at around 5:14 p.m., was swiftly responded to by local police after the victim reported being threatened with what appeared to be a real firearm. Investigators uncovered that it was supposed to be a simple sale of AirPods and hoodies amounting to $495. Instead, the defendants are alleged to have pulled out a weapon to forcefully take the merchandise. In a pursuit that followed soon after, Jones is accused of having tried to elude officers in a high-speed chase, an act that inevitably added to the gravity of his charges.
During a subsequent traffic stop involving a GMC SUV connected with the suspects, authorities claim Jones fled the scene and was later apprehended while the vehicle was being towed. The police's diligent work led to the recovery of three BB guns following a search warrant executed on the vehicle. The unnamed juvenile turned himself in the next day. "The allegations that these two defendants robbed an innocent man at gunpoint in a public park are outrageous," stated Robert Berlin, DuPage County State’s Attorney, emphasizing the severity of the crime and the response it warrants.
Woodridge Chief of Police Tom Stefanson, recognizing the same, affirmed that such actions will not be tolerated while applauding the efforts of those involved in the apprehension and investigation. The juvenile faces one count of Armed Robbery and one count of Aggravated Robbery, portraying the justice system's intent to fully address and correct the harrowing nature of crimes committed by youth. Both defendants are currently being detained and are scheduled for upcoming court appearances, with Jones' arraignment set for December 16 and the juvenile's hearing on December 5, as per the info provided by the DuPage County news release.
While charges have been filed, the legal process maintains the presumption of innocence for both individuals until proven guilty.
