Palo Alto Police arrested Thomas Albert Yencken, a 28-year-old resident of Palo Alto, on prowling and other misdemeanor charges after he allegedly entered an occupied home on Sunday night, authorities reported.
According to a press release from the City of Palo Alto, the incident unfolded when a resident of the 1700 block of Hamilton Avenue was disturbed by noises downstairs and discovered Yencken standing in his kitchen around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday. The intruder claimed it was a mistake and fled the scene, but authorities were called to the residence shortly before midnight.
The officers arrived but were initially unable to locate Yencken. However, reviewing the homeowner's security footage revealed that the suspect had gained entry by prying open a patio door lock. Despite the break-in, the homeowner reported no missing or damaged property.
A short while later, the patrol officers found the suspect nearby, detaining him without incident. Yencken now faces charges of prowling, trespassing, and vandalism, as listed in his booking information. The police have recommended that the District Attorney's Office weigh the possibility of adding a burglary charge.
