Police in Phoenix were engaged in two separate shootings involving officers within 12 hours, one of which led to the death of a home invasion suspect following a police chase. The fatal incident occurred late Monday night when officers responded to a call about an armed burglary in the vicinity of 19th and Southern Avenues. As per ABC15, police located a pickup truck matching the description of the suspect's vehicle but the driver refused to stop, eventually crashing into a wall.
The pursuit concluded when the driver, 41-year-old Carlos Fregoso, emerged from the vehicle with two guns and ran while brandishing one of the firearms. This action ultimately led police to open fire, fatally wounding Fregoso, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers were not injured in the encounter. "Officers gave the man commands to stop and drop the gun as the man continued to run towards a residential home," Phoenix Police described to FOX10 Phoenix. The suspect had raised his gun towards officers as he reached the driveway of a residence, prompting them to discharge their handguns.
Authorities recovered two handguns near the body of Fregoso and located an additional rifle inside his pickup truck. According to initial findings, Fregoso was confirmed to be the suspect involved in the reported home invasion. The Phoenix Police Department's investigation into the incident is active and ongoing as detectives continue to process the crime scene.
