The Pierce County Council has approved changes to the 2024-2025 Biennial Budget. The updated budget includes increased funding for sectors like affordable housing, homelessness, and youth programs. The council passed an ordinance on Tuesday to amend the budget, with further details available on the Pierce County's website.
After Pierce County Executive Bruce Dammeier presented his financial forecast, the Council's Committee of the Whole reviewed and adjusted the proposal before sending it to the full Council for a final decision. "Many of the proposed increases in the Executive’s proposal have merit, but some require further thought and analysis and are better suited for consideration next year," said Council Chair Ryan Mello (District 4). This reflects the changing local government structure, which could bring new priorities in 2025, especially with a change in leadership at the Sheriff's Department. The budget includes $425,000 for new positions in government affairs and a $75,000 increase in housing assistance for therapeutic court participants. The plan also aims to reduce the use of fund balance by $3.6 million to keep the county's finances strong.
The Economic Development Department will work with local tourism groups to create a plan by May 1, 2025, to boost Tacoma’s economy for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. $245,000 will fund youth programs, with local leaders involved in the process. $1 million will go to a housing fund to help with affordability, and plans to address homelessness will be reviewed after February 2025. There’s also a proposed program to waive sewer connection fees for certain housing projects by September 2025. These changes will take effect in early 2025 or 10 days after the Executive signs the plan, according to the Pierce County.
