A routine traffic stop in Northeast Portland led to the seizure of multiple firearms, ammunition, and a substantial amount of cash. On November 20, officers from the Portland Police Bureau's Focused Intervention Team (FIT) pulled over a vehicle at the intersection of Northeast Halsey Street and Northeast 74th Avenue due to several traffic violations. The encounter quickly escalated when officers spotted a firearm in a seat pocket, prompting the detention of all four occupants.
The search that followed allowed officers to quickly discover two additional firearms. The cache included three firearms in total, with more than 80 bullets and over $3,000 in cash, according to a statement from the Portland Police Bureau. This wasn't the first time this vehicle had to inexorably draw police attention; approximately a month ago, two firearms were seized during another traffic stop involving the same car.
As a result of Wednesday's stop, four individuals were arrested and transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center. The suspects are facing charges that include Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Possession of a Loaded Firearm in Public. Among them are 19-year-olds Elijah Q. Martin and Lamar L. Stewart, 18-year-old Aerion L. Purifoy, and 23-year-old Rowan J. Swanson, who was also held on a probation officer detainer.
This incident highlights the ongoing work of the FIT, a unit established to combat gun violence in the city. The FIT is dedicated to not only just deter, but also to apprehend those violating gun laws, a point that is underscored by the reoccurrence of such offenses by the same individuals or associated parties. The seizures and arrests are part of a broader strategy to address the safety of the community and reduce the number of firearms unlawfully circulating in the public sphere.
