As sideshows continue to disrupt the streets of Sacramento, the City Council is ready to take action with a vote set for today on measures that would introduce stiffer penalties for participants and spectators alike. According to a report by KCRA, these illegal sideshow events, which block intersections and involve dangerous car maneuvers, have become a public nuisance, often resulting in injuries to the overzealous crowd or innocent passersby caught in the fray.

Council Member Lisa Kaplan has introduced the Sideshow Ordinance Amendments to address street takeovers. The proposal targets drivers, spectators, and event organizers, with city officials emphasizing that Sacramento streets are not meant for dangerous racing activities.

Kaplan's recommendations also involve providing law enforcement with advanced tools to enforce the proposed crackdown. "It’s time that we do more to ensure the safety of our communities and use all available tools to crack down on sideshows, their promoters and the spectators," Kaplan told FOX40. The tools include the use of drones and license plate readers, among other technologies.

Previous attempts to push an ordinance against sideshows were stalled; however, Governor Newsom's recent signing of new laws targeting these gatherings has renewed momentum for local legislation. The significant community interest and concern has led to the decision to hold the council meeting at 5 p.m., where members of the public are invited to attend in person at the City Hall Complex located on 915 I Street, Sacramento.
