The San Diego Police Department has secured a $279,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to bolster its Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program. This initiative is designed to promote safer practices among cyclists and walkers while underscoring the vigilant responsibility drivers must maintain, especially in shared spaces.
Local authorities are enthusiastic about the grant's potential impact on community safety. "We are excited to receive this grant, which will allow us to significantly expand our bicycle and pedestrian safety program," Sergeant Gregory Minter said, as per the City of San Diego. Through education and awareness, the police department aims to lower the risk of crashes and safeguard those who walk or ride through the city streets.
Various safety activities are to be implemented, supported by the grant. These include walk audits to identify hazardous areas, Open Streets events to encourage pedestrian-friendly activities, bicycle safety courses for youth, and helmet distribution. Additionally, educational endeavors will target school-aged children, seniors, and even homeless individuals, stressing the importance of visibility during travel.
Funding for the Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, working through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
