San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced a conviction in two separate sexual assault cases against Sergio Barillas Perez, 32. According to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, Perez was found guilty by a jury of serious charges, including rape by force and attempted rape in incidents from December 2021 and February 2022.
In the first case, the evidence presented at trial showed that Perez lured a woman into his garage in the Excelsior District, where he sexually assaulted her. Months later, he followed another woman out of a bar and assaulted her as well. "I would like to thank the jury for their service on this trial and the survivors for their courage and resilience," Jenkins said in her statement, per the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. She emphasized that the jury's verdict signals that such heinous acts are to be held accountable by the community firmly.
Assistant District Attorney Katherine Wells and a dedicated team of investigators and victim advocates worked on the prosecution. Perez remains in custody and awaits sentencing, which will be determined following a court date on January 16, 2025. The successful outcome of the trial was largely due to the rigorous investigation led by the San Francisco Police Department's Special Victims Unit.
