A late-night incident on a Louisiana highway has resulted in tragic loss. On Wednesday, at around 11:45 p.m. Samuel Harris Jr. was fatally struck by a vehicle as he walked along US Hwy 11 near 5th Avenue in St. Tammany Parish. The 61-year-old Slidell resident sustained fatal injuries from the collision and was declared dead at the scene, Louisiana State Police reported.
In their preliminary findings, state troopers disclosed that the 2008 Nissan Titan was traveling in a northbound direction when, for reasons that are yet unresolved, it hit Harris, who was also in the northbound lane. Despite the severe outcome for Harris, the driver of the Nissan, who was using a seatbelt at the time, did not incur injuries. State Police have taken routine toxicology samples from both the deceased pedestrian and the uninjured driver, to aid in the ongoing investigation.
Louisiana State Police Troop L, which is leading the inquiry into the accident, has taken this moment to remind both pedestrians and motorists to be aware of their surroundings. Safeguards, including wearing visible apparel and avoiding poorly lit roads, can significantly reduce the risks for pedestrians. These precautions coupled with the recommendation that pedestrians should always walk facing the traffic and cross at well-lit, designated crosswalks are basic yet vital to preventing such disasters.
