The California State Prison, Solano is currently the center of a homicide investigation after officials discovered the body of Darian L. Hernandez, a 25-year-old incarcerated individual, on Wednesday. According to a report released by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, officers found Hernandez unresponsive in his cell at approximately 8:09 p.m. during a routine security check. Life-saving efforts were swiftly initiated but the incarcerated man was declared dead by 8:52 p.m.

Immediately following the discovery of Hernandez, his cellmate Jonathan M. Perez, was moved to restricted housing while the investigation progresses. Corrections officials, alongside the Solano County District Attorney’s Office are conducting the investigation, no other incarcerated individuals, have been implicated in the incident thus far. Solano County Coroner’s office will be tasked with determining the definitive cause of death.

Hernandez, who was serving a 16-year plus sentence for multiple gang-related offenses, including assault and carrying a loaded firearm, had received an additional sentence in 2021 for an in-prison assault. Perez, who shared Hernandez's cell, was in the midst of a 15-year sentence for an assault with a semiautomatic firearm, resulting in serious injury. He was incarcerated starting January 27, 2021, as per the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
