An incident of aggravated assault shook a Southeast Atlanta neighborhood earlier yesterday, after a 12-year-old child was injured by gunfire. According to a report by the Atlanta Police Department, the assault occurred around 12:15 am at a residence on 2091 Lakewood Trail SE. Officers who responded to the scene discovered the young victim with a gunshot wound to the shoulder and a graze wound to the forearm. The child was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The preliminary findings from the police suggest that the shots were fired from outside the home, penetrating the walls and subsequently wounding the child as they slept. At the location, investigators found multiple shell casings on the street adjacent to the property. Despite the severity of the incident no, prior 911 calls had been recently associated with the residence. Consequently, the shell casings have been gathered for ballistic evidence analysis, as part of the investigation which is still highly active and ongoing.
The authorities are currently working to unmask the circumstances that led to this disturbing event, which interrupted the tranquility of an otherwise quiet neighborhood. As this investigation unfolds, community members are left to grapple with the unsettling reality of gun violence penetrating the sanctity of their homes. The Atlanta Police Department has not released information about potential suspects or motives, however, they are urging anyone with knowledge about the shooting to come forward.
With the shooter still at large, the incident only underscores the imperative of resolving gun-related crimes that tear at the fabric of community safety. "This investigation remains highly active and ongoing at this time as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident," the Atlanta Police Department's news release stated.
