On Thanksgiving morning, a suspect linked to a multi-jurisdictional theft ring was arrested after a confrontation with the Louisiana State Police. The chain of events unfolded when authorities received a tip about a 2023 Jeep Cherokee related to ongoing theft investigations traveling on Interstate 10. According to a statement by the Louisiana State Police, Troopers identified the vehicle near Iowa, LA and began tailing it.
The pursuit continued onto I-210 and then onto US Hwy 90, where additional officers and Troopers attempted a traffic stop at a convenience store's parking lot. The driver, identified as 27-year-old Texan Shanan P. McCoy Jr., collided with a police unit as he fled. Despite McCoy and his two passengers' attempt to escape on foot, law enforcement quickly apprehended them, averting any injuries to officers involved in the chase.
Following the arrest, detectives from the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division were summoned to conduct further inquiries into the matter. A search warrant executed on the Jeep yielded a cache of stolen electronics, including dozens of Apple laptops and iPads, as well as an assortment of tools commonly used in burglary.
Subsequently, McCoy faced booking at the Calcasieu Correctional Center, where he was charged with aggravated battery, flight from an officer, and driving under suspension. Officials indicated that additional charges are expected to be levied as the investigation unfolds. A detailed inventory of the recovered items points to a well-orchestrated criminal plan, raising the question of whether McCoy's arrest might signal a breakthrough in a spate of high-tech thefts across multiple jurisdictions.
