A man implicated in the shooting of two women in Hardeman County, Tennessee, perished on Monday after a gunfire exchange with a state trooper. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is actively piecing together the incident, which quickly escalated into a highway pursuit ending in the suspect's death.
The confrontation had its origins in what the TBI described as a domestic altercation, reported FOX13 Memphis. After the suspect allegedly shot two women, he attempted to hastily flee the scene with an infant in his vehicle. The pursuit began near the Madison County line shortly after the Hardeman County Sheriff's Department was alerted to the shooting at around 1:20 p.m. A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper endeavored to forcibly stop the vehicle, but the driver, choosing to resist, fired upon the trooper.
As reported by WREG, the trooper responded with gunfire, which led to the suspect's vehicle crashing just south of Highway 100. The driver died at the scene, although the investigation is continuing to understand if the fatal wound was self-inflicted or the result of return fire by the trooper. Remarkably, no law enforcement officers were harmed during the ordeal.
The two women injured in the original shooting were rushed to local hospitals, one in critical condition, while the infant involved was also treated for injuries, adds Local Memphis. The TBI is currently continuing to investigate not just the sequence of the events leading to the fatal crash but also the broader circumstances that catalyzed the violence that day. Once complete, their findings will be delivered to District Attorney General Mark Davidson for a decision on any subsequent charges that may be warranted.
