As winter tightens its grip on Northern California's higher elevations, chain controls are in effect. Fresh snow on this morning has led to mandatory vehicle chains on all Sierra Nevada freeways, including Interstate 80 and Highway 50, according to KCRA 3.

Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drives with snow tires on I-80, from Nyack to Truckee eastbound and from the Donner Lake Interchange to Nyack westbound. On Highway 50, chains are needed from Twin Bridges to Meyers. Today has been labeled as an Impact Day for the Sierra due to potential travel and outdoor activity disruptions caused by the snow.

CBS News reported that State Routes 88 and 20 have also implemented chain controls. For SR-88, they are in effect from Ham's Station to Picketts Junction, and for SR-20, from near Washington Road to the intersection with I-80.

Snow requires preparation and adds to the cost of chain installation. The Sierra becomes a challenging environment during these conditions. "When chain controls are in effect, the speed limit is 30 mph," and along Highway 50, it drops to 25 mph, as per KCRA report.

The snow is expected to continue into the afternoon, with clearer conditions by tomorrow morning. The region is also preparing for more rain on Sunday night.
