A two-vehicle crash on Highway 97 in Klamath County last Friday resulted in the deaths of two people. According to the Oregon State Police, the accident occurred near milepost 228 and involved a white Cascadia Freightliner and a black Subaru WRX.
The investigation by Oregon State Police found that a Freightliner, driven by 32-year-old Gurvinder Singh of Stockton, California, lost control on icy roads. The truck veered into the opposite lane, and its tractor collided with the trailer. A southbound Subaru then crashed into the Freightliner, causing significant damage.
The victims in the Subaru were Leonides Jimenez Mendoza, 24, and Humberta Hernandez Hernandez, 43, both of unknown residence. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities were released after next of kin were notified. The highway was closed for about six hours while the Oregon State Police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated. Local agencies, including the Chiloquin Fire District and the Oregon Department of Transportation, helped manage the incident and reopen the highway.
