Union County Human Resources employee Krysten Carlsen was honored with the fall 2024 Caught in the Act Award for her rapid response during a medical emergency, Union County officials announced yesterday. Carlsen's ability to act swiftly when an on-duty security officer suffered a medical issue at the Government Center on August 23 ensured the individual received prompt medical attention and kept the facility secure.

The Caught in the Act Award celebrates county employees who deliver exceptional service beyond their regular duties. When confronted by the emergency, Carlsen coordinated immediate medical assistance for the ailing officer and reached out for support from Director of Security Risk Management Jeff Morgan and Risk & Safety Program Manager Mike Farrar, according to a Union County press release. Her initiatives also involved deputies from the nearby judicial center for securing additional coverage, while she managed the main security desk.

Julie Broome, Union County's Director of Human Resources, praised Carlsen's actions, saying, "Krysten's swift and selfless actions on that day exemplify the commitment and dedication we strive for in Union County." She highlighted Krysten’s multi-faceted response, which included handling visitor check-ins and giving directions to keep the Center functional, as reported by Union County.

County Manager Brian Matthews echoed the commendations for Carlsen, adding, "We are incredibly proud of Krysten's initiative and her willingness to step up when it was most needed. Her efforts reflect the values of teamwork and service that make our county such a great place to work.” With her gesture of selflessness and initiative, Carlsen not only adhered to the values of the county but also became eligible for the annual Caught in the Act Employee of the Year Award, and a $250 bonus for her valorous service was also awarded, as detailed by the county’s announcement.
