Gov. Spencer J. Cox, Senate President J. Stuart Adams and House Speaker Mike Schultz have called on Utah State University (USU) to intervene in a legal battle against the Mountain West Conference's transgender participation policy, the Governor's office announced.
Filed last week, the federal suit seeks to bar the Mountain West Conference from implementing its policy on transgender athletes. By intervening, USU would align itself with 11 women volleyball players and a coach from five universities who have already taken legal action. The trio of state leaders remarked in a joint statement obtained by the Governor's Office, "Female athletes deserve the right to a safe playing field, fair competition and equal opportunities. By intervening, Utah will send a clear message that these rights are non-negotiable." They further criticized national governing bodies like the NCAA and Mountain West Conference for, in their view, failing to act and thus "undermining vital protections and putting female athletes at risk."
