San Francisco's sister city to the East, Washington D.C., is witnessing a significant change in its government personnel. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that Laura Zeilinger is stepping down as the Director of the Department of Human Services. According to an official statement released by the D.C. government, Zeilinger has been with the Bowser Administration since 2015 and has played a pivotal role in overhauling the city's approach to homelessness.

Moving on from a key post, Zeilinger leaves behind a legacy of initiatives aimed at combating homelessness— a mission she embarked upon when she first joined the Administration. She was integral to the closing of DC General, a former hospital turned into a homeless shelter which, under her tenure, was replaced with smaller, more community-integrated shelters. "We didn't just close DC General, we transformed our homeless services system so that it works better for the people and families who need it, when they need it," Mayor Bowser said in a statement. Zeilinger's efforts have contributed to a decrease in family homelessness and an enhancement of resources such as TANF reform and the creation of Career MAP.

Much of the success, according to Bowser, can be attributed to Zeilinger's approach to listening closely to the families affected. They have been instrumental in shaping the policies that affect them directly. "Laura hasn't shied away from big goals or difficult projects," Mayor Bowser acknowledged. She emphasized the outgoing director’s focus on treating families as knowledgeable individuals with a deep understanding of their own needs.

Bowser expressed both appreciation and optimism for Zeilinger’s future endeavors. "I’m grateful that Laura made the decision to join the Administration," the mayor remarked, highlighting the nearly decade-long commitment to the betterment of the city's less fortunate. As the administration begins its search for a successor, the city waits to see who will step into Zeilinger’s shoes, to carry on the work that she, and the administration, have championed for years.
