A Washington, D.C. man, identified as 20-year-old Maurice Edwards, has been convicted by a jury on charges of armed carjacking and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, that dates back to an incident in March this year. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia, the verdict arrived on November 21, and the culprit faces a mandatory minimum of fifteen years behind bars. Edwards is slated for sentencing on January 22, 2025, a date set by The Honorable Andrea Hertzfeld.
The scene of the crime unfolded in the Deanwood neighborhood, where Edwards, after blowing through a stop sign, collided with another vehicle, then alongside a co-conspirator, proceeded to commandeer the victim's car at gunpoint, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia. The collision occurred at the cross-section of 48th Pl. NE and Lee St. NE as the victim was on route home from work; Edwards' accomplice nabbed the car, and in a desperate attempt to apprehend the victim who initially sought escape from his driver's side door, Edwards chased and subdued him, securing the co-conspirator's escape with the stolen vehicle.
Enforcements from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) took charge of the investigation in collaboration with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anthony Cocuzza and Mark Levy helmed the prosecution and trial proceedings, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
