A 20-year-old Washington, D.C. woman, Derricka Burton, has been handed a six-year prison sentence for her role in a Christmas Day robbery, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. According to the announcement made by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the MPD, Burton will also face three years of supervised release after her prison term.

During Burton's trial, which culminated in a guilty verdict for two counts of robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery on June 20, evidence presented demonstrated her and three others targeting a couple in Alethia Tanner Park. The incident, which took place at approximately 2:38 p.m. on December 25, 2023, was captured on video. The footage revealed Burton's group conspiring before two members approached the victims, brandished a firearm, and proceeded to rob them of a Canada Goose jacket, cellphone, among other possessions. Following the robbery, Burton was seen picking up some of the dropped stolen property before fleeing the scene with her accomplices.

Burton was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department on February 12. The Honorable Robert Salerno, of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia who sentenced Burton, followed through on the jury's finding from her trial earlier in the year.

In a statement published by the U.S. Attorney's Office, both Graves and Smith acknowledged the diligent efforts of the MPD investigators. They also commended Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Toogun and, Katrenia Shelly for their roles in prosecuting the case.
