A shooting incident in the Poplar Grove neighborhood has left a 21-year-old man critically wounded and his friend facing charges. According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the investigation began following multiple 9-1-1 calls on Friday at around 5:20 p.m., reporting the occurrence near Indiana Avenue and Emery Street.
Responding officers found the victim, secured the firearm along with other evidence, and offered emergency medical care. The initial assessment of the situation by the authorities suggested that both men were handling the firearm when the suspect allegedly triggered it unintentionally, injuring his friend.
The wounded individual was transported to the hospital and is reportedly in critical but stable condition, with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The SLCPD's Crime Lab Unit has been tasked with collecting and analyzing evidence from the scene.
Subsequently, the 21-year-old was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges that included reckless endangerment and the unlawful discharge of a firearm. The need for responsible firearm handling and secure storing methods is highlighted by the unfortunate event, with free cable locks being available at the Public Safety Building to further community safety efforts.
The department shared safe firearm practices, underlining the importance of treating every gun as loaded and keeping the finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Also, storing ammunition separately and using trigger locks or cable locks were recommended to prevent similar incidents. In addition, the police remind residents that charges are allegations until proven guilty in a court of law and mentioned the policies regarding the release of jail booking photos in line with Utah Code 17-22-30.
