An 81-year-old pedestrian, Muoi Te Hua, died from injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Southeast Portland. The incident occurred near Southeast Powell Boulevard and Southeast 82nd Avenue on Sunday at approximately 9:00 a.m. Authorities and emergency services responded to the scene.
According to a press release from the Portland Police Bureau, the driver involved remained at the location and cooperated with law enforcement officials. Preliminary findings by the police suggest that the driver was attempting to exit a parking lot before coming to striking the victim. At the time, impairment did not appear to factor into the incident. Hua was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention but unfortunately passed away the following day.
Hua's death brings Portland's traffic-related fatalities to 69 this year. This number may differ from the count by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which excludes crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roads, non-motor vehicles, medical events, or fatalities occurring more than 30 days after the crash.
Authorities have not yet decided whether to charge the driver involved and are seeking more information about the crash. The Portland Police Bureau's Major Crash Team is leading the investigation, in coordination with the Medical Examiner. Officials urge anyone who saw the accident to come forward.
