As temperatures steeply in Akron, Mayor Malik steps up with a humanitarian response. For those struggling against the biting cold, a warming center at Summit Lake Community Center will have extended hours today, keeping its doors open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. This temporary measure has been activated to provide refuge for residents faced with the harsh winter chill.
While Akron's other community centers will stick to their regular schedules, the city is actively monitoring the weather forecast and is ready to modify hours as the wintry conditions persist, said Mayor Malik in a statement obtained by SFist. Still, unless a further announcement says otherwise, these centers will revert to their regular operating hours starting tomorrow.
Adding to the city's support services, the Emergency Overnight Shelter at 111 East Voris St. will open its doors to offer nighttime relief tonight and tomorrow from 7 pm to 8 am. The shelter serves as a joint effort among The Peter Maurin Center, Summit County Continuum of Care, and Community Support Services to supply food, shelter, and clothing for those in need.
Residents seeking more information about these essential services or interested in offering support can visit the Emergency Overnight Shelter's website. For additional details on the warming center’s extended hours, Akron residents can refer to the City of Akron’s official announcement.
