In an announcement to streamline the jaunt for San Diegans to the nation's capital, Alaska Airlines has thrown open the doors for bookings on its freshly minted nonstop flight from San Diego to Washington, D.C. The eagerly-awaited connection, flagging off on March 17 next year, links San Diego International Airport with Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), revealed by The San Diego Union-Tribune. This route achievement follows the U.S. Department of Transportation's nod, part of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2024, which relaxed the airport's perimeter rule, usually capping nonstop flights within a 1,250-mile radius of DCA unless exceptions apply.
Forgetting the need to hop through hubs and layovers, passengers can now waltz directly from the West Coast to within touching distance of the heart of American political machinations. The sole direct service by Alaska Airlines is poised to fill a service vacuum. Historically, San Diego lacked a nonstop shot to DCA despite the palpable demand from industries nested in defense and biotechnology. "We are very pleased with the DOT’s approval of Alaska Airlines to begin service between SAN and DCA," Kimberly J. Becker, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, said, as per Hoodline, emphasizing the flight's boon for seamless transit.
Linked now with its previously elusive eastern counterpart, San Diego adds its name alongside Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, cities already graced by Alaska Airlines with nonstop service to DCA. As per the details shared by Alaska Airlines, the flights are scheduled to leave San Diego at 2:10 p.m., arriving at Reagan National at 9:55 p.m. Conversely, the return flights will rise and shine early, taking off at 8 a.m. from DCA, alighting passengers back in San Diego by 10:35 a.m. the same morning.
