Residents of the Harrison neighborhood are on high alert after a series of recent armed robberies and aggravated vehicular hijackings were reported in the area. According to a community alert from the Chicago Police Department, a suspect on a motorized scooter has been targeting individuals, brandishing a firearm or implying he is armed to demand the surrender of personal belongings. In a chilling pattern of predation, victims noted the suspect had been following them before making his move.
The incidents, which occurred within the jurisdiction of the 11th District, took place at various times and locations, heightening the concern among residents. The first reported robbery happened on October 31st on the 500 block of N. St. Louis Avenue at 9:10 p.m. Subsequent incidents unfolded on the 3300 block of W. Chicago Avenue on November 5th at 2:00 p.m., the 3400 block of W. Augusta Boulevard on November 10th at 3:00 p.m., and, most recently, the 800 block of N. Kedzie Avenue on December 5th at 7:00 p.m. Following them, the victims only realized the danger they were in when it was too late.
The offender has been described as a black male between 15 and 19 years old, around 5'07" to 5'09" in height, and weighing approximately 140-160 pounds. During the robberies, he was observed wearing dark clothing and a ski mask, making it challenging for witnesses to remember any unique physical characteristics. Nevertheless, the community has been urged to note details such as scars, acne, or distinctive dental features, which could aid in identification.
Police advise against resisting or pursuing the assailant during a robbery for safety reasons. Those in such dangerous circumstances should focus on evasion and survival. If approached by a witness, they should request contact information to provide to the police later. Additionally, in the immediate aftermath of a crime, calling 9-1-1 and trying to remain on the scene is crucial for preserving evidence, which must not be touched under any circumstance. And when possible, don't forget to report any suspicious activities or individuals seen in the area.
