The Cumberland Mall was flooded with law enforcement last night after Cobb County police received calls suggesting an active shooter on the premises. However, the initial investigation revealed that the situation was, in fact, a fistfight among several individuals, not a shooting incident as first feared. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, multiple people were detained following the altercation, though it remains unclear if any of them will face charges. Shoppers and residents were asked to avoid the area while officers conducted their investigation.
Responding to several 911 calls around 5:45 p.m., the officers were initially told that masked men were seen running and, purportedly, opening fire in the mall. This triggered a swift response to securely manage the unfolding "chaotic situation," leading to the detention of two juveniles and one adult. As reported by Atlanta News First, a trail of blood found in front of several storefronts further complicated the scene, although after reviewing security footage, the authorities now confirm the blood was left by someone involved in the fight who exited the mall.
Despite initial reports involving firearms, Cobb County police affirmed there was no evidence of a shooting. "The Cobb County Police Department would like to assure the public that there is no ongoing threat to safety at Cumberland Mall," said the police statement obtained by Atlanta News First. No hospitals have reported treating injuries related to this incident, which further supports law enforcement's account of events.
