The complexities of holiday air travel often extend beyond crowded terminals and delayed flights. Lost or damaged luggage is a significant issue for travelers. An analysis by FinanceBuzz, a personal finance website, uses data from the Department of Transportation to examine luggage handling trends, citing American Airlines Group Inc. as having mishandled the highest number of bags in December 2023, with 60,032 out of 9.2 million, or 6.5 bags per 1,000, as reported by WFAA.
With the heavy load, Southwest (NYSE: LUV) processed over 12 million bags through its operations, mishandling 4.6 bags per every 1,000 -- this means passengers faced a 1 in 216 chance of their luggage being affected. Conversely, Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL) demonstrated commendable efficiency. Per WFAA, it had the lowest likelihood of mismanaged luggage with a mere 0.36% chance of a baggage mishap.
According to the FinanceBuzz analysis featured in the Phoenix Business Journal, New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) topped the list with 2.59 mishandled bags per 100,000 passengers. United Airlines presented the second most significant risk of luggage loss or damage, with a 1 in 181 chance. In contrast, Oakland International Airport (OAK) and Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) reported no mishandled bags, reflecting a stark disparity in performance across the country's travel hubs.
Airlines recorded a cancellation rate of 1.29% last December, an improvement from the 2.7% reported in December of 2022, as cited by WFAA. Despite a troubling track record for luggage, American Airlines boasted the lowest rate of flight cancellations at 0.1%. Meanwhile, delays due to National Aviation System issues and late-arriving aircraft remain a persistent challenge for carriers like American and Southwest, emphasizing the complex interplay of factors that influence the travel experience during the holiday season.
