Placer County was thrust into a tense situation yesterday when an armed man, accused of firing a rifle, prompted a shelter-in-place order in North Auburn. According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), the incident began around 11:30 a.m. near Bill Francis Drive. Reports from FOX40 indicate that the man was allegedly using a rifle with a drum magazine, causing concern among residents and law enforcement alike.
As the situation unfolded, the PCSO's crisis negotiation team engaged with the man, who was described as uncooperative and refused to exit his vehicle. "Our crisis negotiation team is on scene attempting to get the suspect to turn himself over peacefully," PCSO said in a statement obtained by FOX40. During the stakeout, roads were closed and residents were told to avoid the area, with particular emphasis on Crystal Springs Road.
The standoff concluded when, after several hours, deputies used a chemical agent and a K9 officer to extract the suspect from his vehicle. The KCRA reports that following his apprehension, the man was arrested and booked into the Placer County Jail. Charges for the suspect include threatening violence, and he was taken to a local hospital before being incarcerated.
The community that was on edge can now breathe a sigh of relief as the shelter-in-place order has been lifted following the arrest. Roads have reopened and, normalcy begins to return to the streets of North Auburn. The PCSO praised the effectiveness of their K9 unit, which "stopped the man," according to statements from the KCRA. The incident, now resolved, serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by local law enforcement and, the necessity for community vigilance.
