Athens-Clarke County Announces Holiday Changes to Waste Collection Schedule

The Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department is altering its collection schedule to accommodate Christmas Day and New Year's Day festivities. Those living in Athens-Clarke County can expect a brief pause in garbage and recycling pickups over the holiday season. According to the department's announcement, no collections will occur on December 24, December 25, 2024, and January 1, 2025.

Residents outside the downtown area should note changes to their trash and recycling schedules. Monday, December 23 pickups will remain as usual, but Tuesday and Wednesday collections will be delayed until Thursday, December 26, when missed pickups will be completed. Thursday pickups will be moved to Friday, December 27. For the following week, the Monday and Tuesday schedules will stay the same, but Wednesday collections will be delayed until Thursday, and Thursday pickups will move to Friday. Regular schedules will resume on January 6.

Downtown district dwellers can expect no changes to their pickup schedule, except for Christmas Day, when there will be no service. As a result, trash and recycling will be collected a day later. This adjustment allows waste management workers to spend the holiday with their families. Residents are reminded to place their carts out by 7:00 AM on their designated pickup days to accommodate the revised schedule, as noted by the county's official website.
