The Pittsburgh community in Southwest Atlanta has been left searching for answers after a teen was shot and killed on a somber Christmas Eve. Sekya Smith, an 18-year-old senior and star athlete at Carver High School, was fatally wounded in a shooting on Smith Street, close to her home. Describing the impact of the tragedy, a statement obtained by Atlanta News First delineates her as a "cherished friend" and a much-loved member of the school community.
An Atlanta resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, acknowledged to Atlanta News First that the incident, while tragic, did not come as a shock given past episodes of violence in the neighborhood. "No, it’s not that surprising," he said. The individual further reflected that infusing more resources into the community could potentially curb future crimes, suggesting that a lack of opportunities may be a root cause of the persisting issues.
Sekya Smith had a promising future ahead of her, with plans to attend Albany State to study criminal justice and join the college basketball team. Her mother, Brittany Harp, expressed her devastation and longing for justice in an emotional interview with 11Alive. "She didn’t deserve that," Harp said through tears. "It’s senseless." Harp further disclosed that Sekya also excelled in softball and track at Carver High School.
Purpose Built Schools Atlanta, the organization that operates Carver STEAM Academy, has proclaimed its devastation over Sekya's loss, offering condolences and arranging counseling for affected staff and students. The school is also planning a memorial service to honor her memory. To support the family with funeral expenses, an online fundraiser has been set up, drawing attention to the community's collective mourning and desire to provide support for the Smith family in their time of need.
As the Atlanta Police Department continues with the investigation, the sorrowful plea of a mother echoed, calling out to the unknown assailant in an 11Alive interview. "You're a coward," Harp declared, a statement that stirs the conscience of an entire community.
