According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the attempted robbery took place around 2:50 p.m. yesterday in the 1500 block of West Garfield Boulevard when a male suspect brandished a handgun and demanded property from a 43-year-old man working outdoors.

The situation rapidly escalated to a physical struggle, during this altercation - the gun, originally wielded by the assailant, discharged and the would-be robber was hit in the torso, as described by the CBS News. The injured party was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead later.
