Bay Area Drivers to Face $1 Toll Increase on State-Owned Bridges Starting January 2025Source: Metropolitan Transportation Commission

The Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) has announced that in the coming year, the price for crossing the span of the seven state-owned bridges in the region will rise by $1. Effective January 1, 2025, this hike marks the third bump in a series enacted by the California Legislature's Senate Bill 595 and affirmed by voters with Regional Measure 3 back in June 2018. As reported by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the first increase went into effect at the start of 2019, followed by another in 2022.

The upcoming increase will set regular tolls for two-axle cars and motorcycles at $8, an ascent from the former $7. The toll is getting steeper for those handling vehicles with more axles. On January 1, 2025, drivers of three-axle vehicles will need to fork over $18, while four-axles will be charged $23, escalating to $38 for those navigating behemoths of seven axles or more. And for early birds and night owls taking advantage of peak-period toll discounts, the cost for motorcycles, carpools, and clean-air vehicles is rising to $4 during designated weekday hours, up from the current $3.50.

The toll authority continues to offer a 50-cent discount for two-axle vehicles making more than one bridge crossing during commute hours, 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. Qualifying carpools, motorcyclists, and drivers of clean-air vehicles can also stack an additional 25-cent discount off their discounted carpool toll for their second crossing of the day.
