An officer-involved shooting in Middletown, Ohio, has left one person dead following an altercation yesterday evening. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is currently looking into the circumstances that led to the tragic outcome, as reported by WLWT.
Authorities say the incident occurred approximately at 7:20 p.m. yesterday at an apartment building located off Park Lane, according to FOX19. Middletown Division of Police responded to a 911 call concerning two men engaged in a physical altercation. According to police radio communication provided by WLWT, the situation escalated quickly with a dispatcher encoding, "Two males physically fighting," shortly followed by, "Shots fired."
Upon officers arriving and announcing their presence at the door of the reported apartment, they were confronted by an individual brandishing a handgun. A statement received by WCPO from Daniel Hils of Frontline Advisers explained, "The suspect opened the door with a firearm pointed at the officers." In what was described as a rapidly unfolding situation, the officers then shot and killed the suspect.
A neighbor recounted hearing "6-7 loud pops" at the time of the shooting, a detail which underscores the auditory testament to the event's abruptness and terror that seized the quiet of a routine evening. As relayed by Dan Hils of Frontline Advisors in his discussion with WLWT, this incident is "always very, very difficult. No police officer wants to be put in that situation." It is reported that no officers were hurt during the incident.
