A driver was airlifted to a Cincinnati hospital Saturday evening after a single vehicle veered off U.S. Route 50 and ended up in the East Fork Little Miami River near Dry Run Road in Miami Township. Clermont County dispatch received a call for a car accident at around 6:40 p.m., and the vehicle came to rest in the river with only the driver inside.
According to WLWT, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene at the intersection of Dry Run Road and U.S. 50, where the man was pulled from the vehicle and airlifted to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed to the media, and OSHP says the cause of the crash remains unknown as the investigation continues.
Geography Behind the River Landing
The crash site sits right where Dry Run Creek feeds into the East Fork Little Miami River, a stretch of terrain that helps explain how a vehicle that left the roadway ended up submerged rather than simply stopping in a ditch, according to the Clermont County Engineer's Office. The stretch of road has also seen recent infrastructure work: Miami Township government records show the Ohio Department of Transportation scheduled a full closure on U.S. 50 just east of Dry Run Road back in May 2024 to replace a deteriorated drainage culvert, and the county engineer's office temporarily closed Dry Run Road itself roughly 1,300 feet north of U.S. 50 in June for bridge maintenance that included waterproofing installation.
The medical helicopter used to transport the driver belongs to UC Health's Air Care program, which flies Level I trauma patients from rural landing zones across Greater Cincinnati directly to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Growth Adds Pressure to Local Roads
Miami Township has also been absorbing rapid residential growth that adds traffic to corridors including U.S. 50.
