Last Friday morning, Brentwood officers responded to a burglary alarm at a business on Empire Avenue. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Daniel Whelan, was caught in the act, emerging from the business just as police arrived.
Upon seeing the officers, Whelan attempted to escape the scene on a bicycle. However, his bid for freedom was short-lived. The Brentwood Police Department stated, "Officers quickly located Whelan nearby and took him into custody."
The authorities found that Whelan was not just allegedly taking property that wasn't his, but he was also equipped with a variety of tools that indicated this was a premeditated crime. Among the items recovered were a pry bar, knife, gloves, and other items. The stolen property was quickly associated with the business Whelan had just exited.
Due to these findings, Whelan was arrested for burglary, possession of burglary tools, and other related charges, according to the City of Brentwood Police Department.
