A Brooklyn man has received a sentence of 18 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of his grandfather and the wounding of two other relatives, including a 4-year-old niece. This conclusion comes after a tragic event that shook the Bed-Stuy community back in January 2021. The sentence was delivered last Friday, by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Michael Kitsis.

Dayquan Dubose, 26, was at the center of an argument that escalated into violence when he attacked the young girl with an 18-inch machete in their residence on Putnam Avenue. The attack did not end there; Dubose continued his assault, fatally stabbing his 79-year-old grandfather, James Dubose Sr., and injuring his brother-in-law. In a statement obtained by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, District Attorney Eric Gonzalez expressed his condolences to the family for their loss and emphasized that the sentence holds the defendant accountable for his actions.

The attack, which occurred in two different apartments within the same building, came to an end when other family members managed to subdue Dubose until police arrived. The injured parties were treated at local hospitals with the young girl and the brother-in-law eventually being released after receiving treatment for their wounds. Unfortunately, James Dubose Sr. succumbed to his injuries at Interfaith Medical Center. The prosecution was led by Senior Assistant District Attorney Farin Chasin-Fodeman, from the DA's Domestic Violence Bureau.

“This sentence holds the defendant accountable for a tragic, senseless, and truly horrific act of violence perpetrated against members of his own family. My condolences go out to the family of James Dubose Sr. for their tremendous loss. Thankfully, the other two victims recovered from their wounds,” District Attorney Gonzalez stated, according to the press release.
