A Broward County tax preparer, Jean Volvick Moise, was sentenced today to three years in prison for preparing false tax returns, said U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida, and Acting Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Hipkins of the IRS Criminal Investigation, Miami Field Office. The Fort Lauderdale resident was guilty of a scheme defrauding the IRS, causing his clients to receive larger refunds than they were entitled to, as per U.S. Attorney's Office.

The court records reveal that Moise, 39, bolstered tax returns with a variety of fabrications, including but not limited to, false dependents, false Form 1099 withholdings, false educational credits, and illegitimate Schedules C business expenses—often for nonexistent businesses. His fee for these deceptive services ran above the usual rate charged by tax preparers. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office announcement, Moise's false filings resulted in over half a million dollars worth of unlawful refunds.

Investigations conducted by the IRS Criminal Investigation Division (CI) uncovered the full extent of Moise's fraudulent activities. These efforts led to a recent verdict, with Moise being sentenced to 36 months in prison for his involvement in defrauding the U.S. government. Additional case details and supporting documents are available on the District Court for the Southern District of Florida's website, under case number 24-cr-60057. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Bertha R. Mitrani.
